"Dr. Phelps/Arcanum/Genuine" Medicine Bottle,
America. 1830-1850. Hexagonal, dense olive amber, applied sloping collared mouth - tubular pontil scar, ht. 8 1/8 inches, greatest dia. 3 3/4 inches; (a 7/16 inch chip on the side of the sloping collared mouth, the rest of the bottle appears to be perfect.). A number of these wonderful early medicine bottles were found in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts many years ago by Mr. Henry Harlow, a long time employee at Skinner's Auction Gallery, in a house that was to be destroyed. He donated numerous of the more common Phelps/Arcanum bottles to the Old Sturbridge Village Museum. He told Norman Heckler that he salvaged six of the earlier, rarer items, but that the others were destroyed when the house was razed. | ![]() Click Picture to Zoom |
